Joe Lanier represents clients in federal and state government relations issues with a particular focus on healthcare policy. Joe has more than 20 years of federal and state government affairs experience in both the public and private sectors.
Prior to joining Troutman Sanders Strategies, Joe served as chief legal and legislative counsel for U.S. Senators Jesse Helms (R-NC) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY). In addition, he worked in the Washington government relations practices of two leading national law firms, where he represented diverse clients before Congress on issues in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, education, and energy.
Joe’s practice focus added state work in 2008 when he joined a local Raleigh law firm and began to also represent clients before North Carolina’s General Assembly and state agencies. He advised clients on a variety of government affairs matters, including in the areas of healthcare, hospital and mental health policy, information technology, tax policy, appropriations, and government procurement. Since 2011, Joe has been ranked as a top 25 lobbyist based on the biannual survey conducted by the non-partisan Public Policy Research Center. He continues to lead state and federal advocacy for the group’s clients.
Joe holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina.
